Types of Shipping Containers & Sizes

Shipping containers vary in type and size, each serving unique purposes. Whether you need a nearly new one-trip container, a budget-friendly used option, or a fully customized structure, knowing the differences is integral before starting any container modifications.

At Falcon Structures, we modify shipping containers for everything from offices and bathrooms to industrial enclosures – and we’ve been doing it for over 20 years, so we’re well-versed in this subject. In this guide, we’ll break down the different types of containers and their advantages to help you determine the best fit for your project.

Types of Shipping Containers

One-Trip Shipping Containers

True to their name, one-trip containers have made a single journey across the ocean, primarily from Asia, before being sold. These containers exist largely because the U.S. imports more than it exports. It’s more cost-effective for Asian manufacturers to create new containers rather than have empty ones returned from overseas, hence the supply of one-trip containers state-side.

Since they’ve only been used once, one-trip containers have minimal wear and tear. They’re the closest thing to “new” that you can get, which is why Falcon Structures uses only quality inspected one-trip containers for all projects. Their excellent condition makes them the preferred choice for most modified container projects.

One-trip containers, like these in Falcon Structures' inventory yard, are as close to new as you can get. They have minimal, if any, wear and tear.

Used Shipping Containers

Used containers have spent up to 15 years in active service, traveling across the globe carrying cargo. Their exterior often tells the story of their journeys: dents, rust patches, and faded manufacturer logos. As you might suspect, they’re less expensive than one-trip containers.

If you’re using a used container for a modified shipping container project, steer clear of ones with significant dents, corrosion, warped walls, and residual odors.

Used containers have spent years transporting goods. Depending on their condition, they may not be suitable for a modified container structure.

Purpose-Built Containers

Purpose-built containers are custom-fabricated steel structures designed for unique applications where standard ISO container dimensions and features won’t suffice. These come at a higher price, but the cost is often justified if specific size or design elements can’t be met with traditional containers.

Shipping Container Sizes

20 and 40-foot containers are most common. 10-foot containers are less common, but still available.

Shipping Container Lengths

Most shipping containers fall into one of these categories:

  • 20-foot and 40-foot containers - These are the most common, readily available sizes.
  • 10-foot containers - Available, but less common.
  • 45-foot and 53-foot containers - These exist, but they can be difficult to find.

If you need a 15-foot container, for example, a 20-foot container can be cut down with the end cap reattached. Similarly, multiple containers can be combined to make larger structures, like double-wide spaces

Shipping Container Heights

The standard shipping container height is 8’ 6”.

A high-cube container, however, is a foot taller at 9’6”. Depending on supply, you may be more likely to source a high-cube container rather than a standard one. Here at Falcon, we use high-cubes often for our projects. The extra foot of overhead space is especially useful in workspaces, living spaces, and bathrooms.
