Nucor Steel Brings Container Bathrooms to Memphis Site

Better Bathrooms, Better Morale & Accessibility

Nucor Steel Memphis spans a large, evolving footprint. Employees often had to walk long distances or rely on porta potties for basic bathroom needs. As the site began hiring more women and expanding its operations, leadership saw an opportunity to make the mill more comfortable and accommodating for all of its employees.

Key Challenges

Inaccessible Facilities & Unpopular Porta Potties

Restroom access was a pressing concern. Some workers even had to drive across the site just to reach a restroom with running water. Other pockets of the mill only had porta potties, which became notoriously unpleasant during winter and summer. The lack of comfortable bathroom facilities was also a deterrent during recruitment tours. Candidates didn’t love the idea of spending their career using a portable toilet.

At the same time, the company’s workforce was becoming more diverse. As more women joined the team, the lack of female-specific restrooms became a challenge. Leaders considered permanent construction, but the high cost and long lead times in the Memphis market made it an impractical solution to a pressing need.

Modular Bathrooms That Make an Impact

To meet the need quickly and cost-effectively, Nucor Steel Memphis deployed Falcon Structures’ 20-foot container bathrooms with dual-gender floor plans.

Installed in remote and expanding areas of the site, the units connected to existing water and septic infrastructure, allowing employees to use them almost immediately. In some cases, Nucor installed underground lift stations to accommodate distance and elevation—demonstrating the flexibility of modular deployment.

Compared to stick-built construction, Falcon’s container bathrooms offered a faster, more affordable solution without sacrificing durability or comfort. The units not only improved day-to-day working conditions but also boosted morale—signaling care and investment from leadership.
