Buying versus Renting a Shipping Container

A lot of people here in Central Texas ask me about the benefits of buying a shipping container versus renting a shipping container.  Here's three things I suggest they consider:

  • How long are you going to need the shipping container? If its a permanent solution then you're better off buying it, but if it's a temporary fix, then a rental is probably right for you.
  • Do you have a permanent place to leave a shipping container?  If you'll need to move the shipping container a lot you are probably better off renting the shipping container, because the costs of moving a shipping container can add up.  The moving costs are significantly higher for a 40' shipping container than a 20' shipping container because of the machinery involved.
  • Shipping containers are a comodity and the prices flucuate from time to time.  When prices are up you're probably better off renting a shipping container to meet your immediate needs and then consider buying when the prices come down.
